A 5 lb fire extinguisher offers double the agent capacity, longer discharge time, and higher firefighting ratings (e.g., 1A:10BC or higher) compared to a 2.5 lb unit, which is typically limited to small, immediate-threat, or specialized use. A 5 lb unit provides better coverage and is recommended for kitchens or garages, whereas 2.5 lb units are better for small spaces like cars or under-sink spot protection.
If you already own an extinguisher, Take a close look at the large instruction label stuck to the side of the cylinder to determine which extinguisher size you have.
